Assistant Direction
After completing his formal education, he started networking to venture into the film industry. He began his career in 2008 when he went for an interview and secured a job in the wardrobe department of the American film The Proposal (2009). Thereafter, he decided to pursue a career in the assistant directing (AD) department. In an interview, he said,
Funny enough I interviewed for the wardrobe department, I got the job and I said, “You know I really wanna be more around camera, onset, dealing with actors. And they were nice enough to forward it to the AD department.”
Eventually, he got into the first crew on the sets of the film The Proposal (2009) when one of the crew members got sick and had to leave the shoot.
In the beginning, he was in charge of regulating the use of walkie-talkies on the set. First team (also known as the first crew) is a group of people hired by a production company for regulating various activities on the film set. Members of the first crew deal primarily with the actors, coordinating their hair, makeup, wardrobe, and other behind-the-camera necessities.

Music
As a musician, Rutler was a member of the independent band ‘Nate Mott Band,’ which was formed in Bristol, Rhode Island, in 2006. The band consisted of four members, the lead vocalist and guitar player Nate Mott, electric or acoustic guitar player Matthew Rutler, the drummer Hoyt Hottel, and the bass guitar player Evan Van Gorder. All the members were independent musicians who coincidentally made acquaintance while performing at the same venue. Along with his day job as an AD’s crew member, he pursued his passion for music at night.
In July 2008, ‘Nate Mott Band’ released the album ‘Like We Mean It.’
On November 30, 2008, the band opened for the Patriots vs. Steelers football game. Rutler and other band members raised money through their live shows and performances. The band played for the cast party of the film ‘The Proposal’ (2009) at the Felt Club in Boston. The ‘Nate Mott Band’ was featured on National Public Radio’s Weekend Edition, performed for the “Light Foundation” (a televised charity event by the New England Patriots). They also played at the Dunkin Donuts Center in Providence, Rhode Island, for the Rock the Ink Concert and opened for numerous concerts. The band’s studio was situated in Rehoboth in Massachusetts. While he was working as an AD member in the making of the American television show ‘Empire State,’ the show’s production company came across Nate Mott Band’s music and wanted to feature it in the show.
