In 1995, Kitty’s father, the 9th Earl Spencer, escaped public scrutiny by moving to Cape Town in South Africa, along with his family, to raise his children away from the spotlight. In an interview, while talking about Cape Town, Kitty said,

I don’t think there really is a spotlight in South Africa…I don’t think anyone knew anything about my family. It was good to grow up in an environment where people built each other up.”

She did her schooling at Reddam House, a private school in Cape Town. After her parents divorced in 1997, her father returned to the UK. Meanwhile, Kitty stayed with her mother in Cape Town. Consequently, while growing up she juggled her time between Althorp, the Spencers’ ancestral family home in Northamptonshire, and Cape Town. Although Kitty was scouted by various modelling agencies during her school days, her mother encouraged her to prioritize academics. Thereafter, she enrolled herself at the University of Cape Town, where she studied English, psychology, and politics. As a young aristocratic woman, she was presented as a debutante at the 19th annual Bal Crillon des Debutantes in 2009. Later, she spent three years studying art, history, and Italian in Florence, Italy. In 2012, after returning to the UK, she pursued Masters in Luxury Brand Management at the Regent’s University, London, undertaking a Consultancy at Financial Times as a part of her master’s degree. Facts/Trivia

  • Despite being the eldest child of 9th Earl Spencer, Lady Kitty was not bestowed with the right of succession to the title of Earldom of Spencer and family estates like Althorp and Spencer House belonging to the firstborn child. Due to primogeniture, the feudal rule that states ancestral property be passed on to a male heir, the title and family estates were passed on to her younger brother, Louis Spencer. In spite of her strong gender equality beliefs, in an interview, she stated that she was happy her brother inherited Althorp to keep the property within the family name. She said,

In general, I’m totally pro gender equality. But I’m quite happy that that’s [going to be] my brother’s responsibility. I just think it’s the correct way…I like that the house stays within the same family with the same surname. I wouldn’t want it any other way for the Spencers.”

  • In 2013, she learned about a military charity named Give Us Time, founded by the former British Defence Minister Liam Fox. The charity allots commercially let accommodation donated by owners of holiday groups, hotels, and holiday homes to military families in need of rest, rehabilitation and reconnection with their families. Later, she became an ambassador and trustee of the charity.
  • In 2016, she became an ambassador for the UK-based charity Centrepoint that aims at providing accommodation and support to young homeless people aged 16–25.
  • Despite being a social media freak herself, Kitty is cautious about its side effects and believes it can be dangerous, particularly for young girls. In an interview, she said,

It’s an edited, filtered version of life. Younger girls think that’s reality and something that they can strive for, and if they fall short of that then they’ve somehow failed.”

  • She adores the fictional character named Betty Draper, who appears in AMC’s television series Mad Men (2007). While talking about Betty Draper’s fashion style in an interview, she said,

I’d wear that every day if I wouldn’t get looked at strangely on the street, but it’s absolutely the style I love—just the classic, feminine 50s style.”
